Ohio Department of Education Licensure for SLPs

Professional Pupil Services License: The professional pupil services license, valid for five years for working with learners at all levels, shall be issued to an individual deemed to be of good moral character who has successfully completed an approved program of preparation and who is recommended by the dean or head of teacher education, who has completed an examination prescribed by the state board of education, and who has evidenced the education and experience requirements specified below.

1.      Master's degree or equivalent (75 semester hours)

2. 350 hour clinical practicum

3.      Completion of nine months full-time postgraduate professional experience; 70% of professional experience must be spent in direct clinical contact; if part-time employment is used to fulfill a part of the professional experience requirement, 100% of the minimum hours of part-time work per week must be spent in direct clinical contact

4.      Passage of an examination

Continuing Education Requirement: 20 clock hours of continuing education per two-year period are required to maintain state license. No additional CE is required by the state board of education.

Emergency Certification: 3301-23-44 Temporary Licenses (A) Temporary pupil service license. A temporary pupil services license may be issued to an individual who is deemed to be of good moral character and who evidences a currently valid license as specified below provided the vacancy has been posted with the Ohio department of education for two weeks and no properly licensed and suitable candidate has been identified by the employing district: (3) School speech-language pathologist-currently valid license to practice as a speech pathologist issued by the Ohio board of speech-language pathology and audiology; : Renewal of a temporary pupil services license. A temporary pupil service license may be renewed based upon evidence of a currently valid license issued by the respective Ohio licensure board. A temporary speech-language pathology license issued on the basis of a baccalaureate degree (until December 31, 2001), and a temporary interpreter for the hearing impaired license, a temporary school counselor license, a temporary school nurse license, a temporary school social worker license, and a temporary school audiologist license may be renewed on completion of an additional six semester hours of coursework in an approved program leading to licensure in the area.
